If you were not in attendance on Saturday you missed some great volleyball. As the Powell girls showed everyone how much they have improved. The C girls started showing off first, but they came out a little bit tentative. They found a way to fight back and showed the determination and patience it took to learn how to get 3 hits. Even after the girls lost the 1st game they did not give in to the horrible style of volleyball of their opponent. The girls doubled down on their serves and 3 hits to fight back as they won the 2nd game. The 3rd game needed deep and consistent serves from the girls but they could not execute as the girls lost in heartbreaking fashion with a score of 12-15 in the 3rd game. Regardless of the outcome the coaches were proud of their effort and we can say with 100% confidence that out C girls understand how to play real volleyball.
The B girls came out determined to not let the same thing happen to them. They were a little bit nervous to start, but once things got going the girls stepped up. The girls used good passes, amazing sets and deep serves to put pressure on their opponent. So many of the B girls did great, but some highlights were Juliet S with her serves, Emma L with her sets, Piper P with the owning of the net and Scarlett R with her great hits. The girls got the job done and earned the win. The B girls were the most dominant of the 3 teams as they only gave up double digit points to their opponents in 1 of the 4 games they played. Awesome job ladies.
The most exciting or heart stopping match came from the A girls. The girls were visibly nervous when they started. But they put together enough good serves and attacks to win the first game by 5 points. The 2nd game was a different story. Something happened and the wheels came off the bus as the girls could not execute anything. They were pummeled by a score of 7-21. The girls needed to show some resiliency if they were going to get the job done and pull out the win. They started off slow in the 3rd game by spotting Eulicd a 0-3 lead. But the clutch serves of Ellen M, Megan B, Rowan H and Annalyse B are what allowed the team to pull out the victory by a score of 15-11.
Congratulations girls on a fantastic season and pay attention for the announcement of the end of the year celebration.

Your 8th grade volleyball players once again represented Powell well on Thursday afternoon. The A girls put on an absolute clinic. They had some of the best sets of the season as many of the A girls had impressive attacks as a result of the pretty sets. But it was the impressive serves from Kylee C, Rowan H, Ellen M and Megan B that carried the team to victory. Your Pumas won by a score 21-8 and 21-8. Holding a team to less than double digit points in both games is not done very often at all - well done girls. Thus the A girls earned the right to play for the championship on Saturday.
The B girls came out strong as they passed well and had consistent serves. This combination was deadly when combined with the deep serves from Juliet S and Elyssa J that helped carry the team to victory in the 1st game. And honestly it wasn't even close as they won 21-6. The second game was a different story as the Pumas struggled with their serve. Goddard also stepped up and they passed so much better this game which kept the pressure on the Pumas. The girls would not give in and they continued to have good passes that allowed for many overhand swings. Scarlett R was the leader in that category as she had so many overhand hits that we couldn't keep up with all of the. But none of those over hand attacks could have been possible without the great sets from Piper P, Priscilla C and Emma L.

All three of the 7th grade girl's volleyball teams were victorious against Goddard yesterday afternoon!
Dani S. was the star of the game on the A team, bringing her team to a victory in both games when they were down 13-19 - serving 8 points in a row. Then did it again in game two! Even time outs couldn't break her focus. Lakyn W was a star defender with great digs and passes. Layla G was a great all around player on the court.
The B team MVP was Ava H with her unstoppable serving- 10 in a row for the win and her hustle and hits in both games. Diana F and Hannah C rounded out the great playing with their serves and passing.
The C team had several two hit plays and many of the girls score 2 or 3 points in a row. The girls had many unreturnable serves and had some hustle on the court. In game one, Lucy R started us out with a 3 point lead and later in the game Alexis L served several points in a row.
Congrats to all the girls on a fabulous season. Please bring back your CLEAN jerseys to Ms. Becker in the gym or Miss Goerke in 1067. See you in November for our celebration.

Wow was there some exciting volleyball that happened at Newton yesterday afternoon. The C girls were feeling great after pulling out the win the night before at Goddard. They carried that energy into the first game of the night as they took an early lead against Euclid. The girls started the first game off hot as Evelyn J served about 12 straight points to give the girls a lead. That lead was too much for the Falcons to overcome as the Pumas won 21-6. The second game was much tighter but the girls had clutch passes when they needed them as they completed the sweep vs the Falcons.
The girls earned the right to take on the #1 team from Options who had only 1 loss for the season. The first game was a back and forth affair. The Pumas pulled out the win as the stud server from Options struggled and we had clutch serves from Linnea P and Vicki H. The highlight of the afternoon came in the 2nd game. The stud server from Options brought her team back as the Pumas saw their 7-3 lead evaporate away into a 12-7 deficit. The girls did not give up and had 3 different plays that saw 3 hits with an over hand swing. Some of the girls who were about of those plays included De M., Nora C., Anessa J and Zoey D. The girls fought hard and saw their efforts rewarded as they pulled out the win in the 2nd game by a score of 21-19. Please come out on Saturday as the C girls have earned the right to play for the 1st district championship at 1:00 PM here at Powell. See you there.

The 8th grade volleyball girls traveled to Goddard and the match of the night had to be the C team. But we will get to that later. The A team played some decent volleyball but the Vikings kept scrapping and clawing for every loose ball refusing to let the ball hit. It wasn't until the 2nd game when the girls got going with some thundering attacks once again by Megan B. The girls were able to fight off the rust and the scrappy opponent as they won in 2 games.
The B girls came out energized and ready to take down Goddard. This energy allowed the girls to pull out a victory in the first game. The Vikings pushed back during the 2nd game as the girls started to play the style of volleyball of the Vikings. This meant that Goddard pulled out the win in the second game. The girls came out of the gate strong in the 3rd game with clutch serves from Nina K and Elyssa J. But Goddard would not be contained as they pulled out the upset. The B girls will look for revenge as they get to face the same time on Thursday afternoon.
The C girls struggled in the first game as they once again did not have consistent serves and struggled to pass. But the girls in the 2nd game served much better and passed well enough to win the 2nd game. So it came down to the 3rd game to see if the girls could pull out their 1st win of the season. It was without question the clutch serves of Evelyn J and Linnea P that started off the game on the right foot. But it was the consistent passing that sealed the win for the girls as they got their first W just in time to carry the positive energy into the tournament this afternoon. Please come over to Newton this afternoon to support the C girls or stop into our gym on Thursday afternoon to watch the A & B girls play the 1st round of the tournament.
