April brings National Poetry Month and we are recognizing some memorable poems during our announcements. Enjoy today's poem by Eileen Spinelli.

Poem for a Bully

Somewhere deep inside of you
there's a softer, kinder place.
I know this will surprise you-
but I've seen it in your face.
Your eyes are often sad, although
you wear a surly grin.
Sometimes when you stand all alone
your "mean" seems worn and thin.
I wish that you would take a step -
a small but brave one, too-
and look inside yourself to find
the good I see in you.

April brings National Poetry Month and we are recognizing some memorable poems during our announcements. Enjoy today's poem about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, “O Captain! My Captain!”, by Walt Whitman.

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

April brings National Poetry Month and we are recognizing some memorable poems during our announcements. Enjoy today's poem “ After the Winter” by Claude McKay.

Some day, when trees have shed their leaves
And against the morning’s white
The shivering birds beneath the eaves
Have sheltered for the night,
We’ll turn our faces southward, love,
Toward the summer isle
Where bamboos spire the shafted grove
And wide-mouthed orchids smile.
And we will seek the quiet hill
Where towers the cotton tree,
And leaps the laughing crystal rill,
And works the droning bee.
And we will build a cottage there
Beside an open glade,
With black-ribbed blue-bells blowing near,
And ferns that never fade.

April brings National Poetry Month and we are recognizing some memorable poems during our announcements. Enjoy today's poem “Today” by Billy Collins.

If ever there were a spring day so perfect,
so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze

that it made you want to throw
open all the windows in the house

and unlatch the door to the canary's cage,
indeed, rip the little door from its jamb,

a day when the cool brick paths
and the garden bursting with peonies

seemed so etched in sunlight
that you felt like taking

a hammer to the glass paperweight
on the living room end table,

releasing the inhabitants
from their snow-covered cottage

so they could walk out,
holding hands and squinting

into this larger dome of blue and white,
well, today is just that kind of day.

Today is Day of Silence. Day of Silence is a national student-led demonstration where LGBTQ students and allies all around the country—and the world—take a vow of silence to protest the harmful effects of harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ people in schools. This harassment in schools may be more common than you think: 9 out of 10 LGBTQ students experience it nationally. You may have classmates who choose to participate in remaining silent for the day. Please encourage these students today by being nice, supportive, and respectful, though this is a Powell CORE value that should be practiced daily!

April brings National Poetry Month and we are recognizing some memorable poems during our announcements. Enjoy today's poem “The Voice” by Shel Silverstein.

There is a voice inside of you
That whispers all day long,
“I feel that this is right for me,
I know that this is wrong.”
No teacher, preacher, parent, friend
or wise man can decide
what’s right for you - just listen to
the voice that speaks inside.

Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.

Today is also Jackie Robinson Day - the anniversary of Robinson's historic MLB debut as he broke baseball's color barrier.  Here is a poem for Jackie:

Made It Big Time

When Jackie was a boy,
Balls were his toy.
Tennis, football, baseball and more.
He could play more than four!
Jackie finally made it big time.
But he was treated like he did a crime.
Because he was black and great,
He was teased by his teammates.
Jackie didn't fight back at their fun.
He chose courage and hit a home run!

Enjoy today's haiku.
You think you're big.
With your fancy little words.
This is not so hard.

April brings National Poetry Month and we are recognizing some memorable poems during our announcements. Enjoy today's poem by William Shakespeare.

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate.

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimmed;

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimmed;

But thy eternal summer shall not fade,

Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,

Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,

When in eternal lines to Time thou grow’st.

April brings National Poetry Month and we are recognizing some memorable poems during our announcements. Enjoy today's poem by John Donne.

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
Or of thine own were:
Any man’s death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.

April brings National Poetry Month and we are recognizing some memorable poems during our announcements. Enjoy today's poem by Robert Frost

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

April brings National Poetry Month and we are recognizing some memorable poems during our announcements. Enjoy today's poem, Do not go gentle into that good night by Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Did you hear about the rose that grew
from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature's law is wrong it
learned to walk with out having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams,
it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared.

If you are interested in going out for Soccer and/or Track and Field after school, after spring break, then please make sure to visit the Powell Website' Athletic's page. There you will find a link to sign up for Track & Field and Soccer for the remainder of the year. Both events will be intramural events (no games against other schools), will start the week of April 5th, will be after school from 4:00 pm-5:00 pm, and the seasons will run through the week of May 10th. Late buses won't run until the week of April 12th, so the first week you will need to have a ride home after practice. You don't need to have any experience in either sport to participate. Please fill out the form on the PMS website as soon as possible, and also pick up a participation emergency card during your lunch this week!
