This is a reminder: 8th-grade girls volleyball begins after school today.

At this time I would like to recognize and congratulate three eighth-grade students here at Powell. Among 24 middle and high school students, these young ladies entered their writing into the Littleton Optimist Club's International Essay Contest this January and won first, second, and third place. I don't know that students from a single school have ever won all three awards in this essay contest before, which makes their accomplishments all the more impressive. Please join me in celebrating these Powell students:
Winning third place and $125, Addie Fortin
Winning second place and $250, Chloe Arnold
And winning first place, $500 dollars, and a chance at a $2500 scholarship in the next rounds of the contest, Kimber Burton.
Well done with your powerful and optimistic words, ladies! We are very proud of you!

This Friday is our annual movie night! Bring your family and friends and enjoy a night in, watching “Rise” on the big screen. Be sure to turn in those CORE cards in order to have a chance at winning VIP seats and benefits. There is a special collection box for these in the main office. Remember, doors open at 5:30 and the movie begins at 5:45. We can’t wait to see you there!

Attention NJHS Members:
Our next monthly meeting is THIS Wednesday at 9 am in Mrs. Donda's room. Please be on time as we will have guest speakers coming to talk to us about our next event.

Hello, 8th grade girls. Your volleyball season begins Monday, February 27. Please meet your coaches in the gym after school on Monday, dressed and ready to play.

Calling all artists! Calling all artists! Do you like to draw? Or do you like to design using a computer? We are holding a poster contest for the play, Bedtime Stories. You can hand draw a design or use a computer to create something unique. If the troupe votes for your design, it will become our play poster, the front of our playbill and possibly our t-shirt design too. There is a prize as well. However, there are a few rules for this contest so pick up a rule sheet outside Mrs. Etchells' room, the call board on the back side of the stage, or Mrs. Enley's room. Then be as creative as you want! The deadline is March 1st.

On B team, Cole NcNulty and Lukas Crozier stepped up to the occasion and gave Newton a good run. It was a hard loss, but the team continued to rally and cheer on C team. Attention 8th grade students planning to attend Heritage next year: Heritage High School is holding its 8th-grade Registration on Tuesday, February 7th at 6 pm in the Theater. Students who are registered to attend Heritage will complete their course requests that evening and be established for fall of 2023.

Yesterday the 7th-grade boy's basketball teams took on Goddard. The A Team used their incredible defense, speed, and handling to get an early jump on the Vikings. Miles Upah lead the team in scoring while Toran Lillis, Ryder Wallace, and Nick Sanderford contributed to shutting down Goddard's offense. The Vikings made some nice stops in the 3rd quarter but the Pumas regrouped and played inspired basketball in the 4th, winning 36 to 24.

The B Team also had a strong showing in their last game of the season. It was clear to see how much they grew during the season, both as individuals and as a unit. True to form, they showed their characteristic toughness as they battled the Vikings. Kaiden Vaughn led the team in scoring but other standouts include Matthew Reynold's presence in the paint, Marshall Pool and Luciano Guevara's stout defense, and Adrian Neville and Gabe Mendoza's smart passing. They never took their foot off the gas pedal and they came away with the win.

Following suit, the C team also played their last game with a lot of intensity. It was clear that there were just not enough minutes in the game to satisfy everyone's hunger to play. Some highlights include Oscar Martland and Ethan Hunt's defense, Frankie Montez's steals, and Christian Flores's toughness. While the team came up a little short in the end, practicing self-control during stressful times, learning what it means to have good sportsmanship, and feeling what it is like to be a part of a team are much more important than any number on the scoreboard.

Thanks to all of the fans who came to came to cheer on the players last night. Unfortunately, the short season has come to an end just when the boys are playing their best ball. Your coaches are very proud of you and are excited about your future in the sport. We will be having an end-of-season party next Wednesday, February 8th, during lunch so please add it to your planners. Finally, please remember to return your clean jersey to Mr. Ennis before the celebration.

All three teams came up just short, but played with good attitudes and hustle. They travel to Newton tomorrow afternoon. Go Pumas!
