GLOBAL DIVERSITY AWARENESS MONTH

October brings Global Diversity Awareness Month to remind us of the positive impact a diverse workforce of men and women can have on a society.

More and more, the world becomes a place where cultures and customs come together, and we are uncertain what is appropriate. Whether a question is taboo or the behavior, there’s opportunity to learn. When we ask questions and are open to learning, the path to two cultures being enlightened is likely.

Each week in October, we will highlight a different culture from around the world, so that you may learn and respect our diverse planet! Today we would like to introduce you to the country of Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka is an island country in South Asia, located in the Indian Ocean southwest of the Bay of Bengal and southeast of the Arabian Sea. It is geographically separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. In 1948, after nearly 150 years of British rule, Sri Lanka became an independent country, and it was admitted to the United Nations seven years later. The country is a member of the Commonwealth and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.

Students, if you did not get the opportunity to have your picture taken yet, Studio 5 will be taking pictures at lunch today and tomorrow. When you arrive in the cafeteria you may head on up to the stage and get your photo taken. Studio 5 may even print your ID card right there. If not, then we will get your ID cards to you as soon as possible. On that note, students who take the bus. Yes, you will need your ID card to get on the bus, but not right away. There was a mix up on getting the correct bus number on your ID cards so we'll have to fix up the mix up and then print you a new ID card. We have informed Transportation, so they should not start asking you to show your ID card(s) for a couple of weeks. Please see any administrator if you have any questions.

Good Morning, Powell! Our Pennies for Patients drive is off to a great start. We have raised about $250, which means we have a long way to go to reach our goal of $5,000. Here are the standings as of last week's collection:
6th Grade: Ms. Ben Ami's CORE has the most points with 1204 while Mr. Braun's CORE has the most negative points.
7th Grade: Ms. Becker's CORE has 350 points while Ms. Calkins' CORE has the most negative points.
8th Grade: Most COREs seem to have negative points - where are those pennies? Looks like its a 4 way tie between Mr. Marshall, Mrs. Sheets, Mr. Sprague and Mrs. Weber who all had empty boxes and 0 points. Mr. Genson continues to be sabotaged and has -2161 points.
Keep up the planning in your CORE Plus class to determine which teachers to sabotage and hunt for those pennies to add to your own box!

But, like all contests, there had to be a winner. That being said, the winners will receive a pizza party for their CORE plus next week!
The winning door for 6th grade is Mrs. Ben Ami's CORE plus class!
The winning door for 7th grade is Ms. Stevenson's CORE plus class!

February is Positive Friends Month for Sources of Strength. Has someone been a good friend to you? Do you want to recognize them for helping you in some way? Maybe they helped you pick up books that you dropped in the hall. Maybe they invited you to join their lunch table. Maybe they helped you get caught up in class after you were sick. All Powell teachers and staff have gold-colored Positive Friend forms in their classrooms, offices, etc. for you to use. There will also be forms available at lunch. Any time you experience someone being a Positive Friend, you can fill out a form recognizing that person. Forms can be turned into the grade level boxes each day in the lunchroom. Every Friday at lunch, we will hold a drawing for 4 students at each grade level. These students will win a cool leather bracelet with a motivational quote on it. Join the campaign and be a Positive Friend!

Mrs. Carstensen and Mrs. Erickson want you to join us in congratulating our 17 Brain Bowl students who represented true Powell "pride" at Saturday's Central Regional Brain Bowl Tournament! The competition against many other teams for twelve finalist slots was challenging and invigorating, and students met their opponents with sportsmanship and respect.

Sixth grade and 8th-grade teams worked very hard and did a great job. Please congratulate James Donahue, Leila Kabil, Audrey Le, and Emerson Drost, Warren Dix, Max Ratcliff, Sophia Millner, and Heidi Hucke on their tremendous teamwork. The competition at the 7th-grade level was intense and resulted in our two teams competing in an epic battle against each other in the final championship round.

Addie Newcome, Anna Rivera, Michael Purfield, Gabe Brock and Sean Yilmaz took 2nd place overall. Makenna Shell, Charlie Catel, Luke Schwartz, and Derek Sprague took first place overall for 7th grade. Both seventh-grade teams placed and will be representing us at the State Championship on March 7th at Hamilton Middle School in Denver! Please be sure to congratulate these smart and successful Brain Bowl students.
