The Puma ladies basketball team came out fighting in 2 games against Euclid last night. The girls' teamwork kicked into high gear as the night progressed.

Macie Miller, Cate Marlin, Ryley David and Katelynn Musgrave played some serious defense, shutting down some of their key players, helping the Pumas to finish the night with one win and one loss.

Way to go Pumas and thanks to all who came out to cheer the girls on!

Your Powell 7th and 8th grade wrestling team competed in the second dual meet of the season last night at Newton Middle School. We won 30 matches and lost 18 in a thrilling evening of competition. All of our ladies and gentlemen stepped up and battled like warriors, but special recognition goes out to the following athletes: Leyton Reeves and Emmet Bland for winning their matches by more than 15 points each, Justine Tiner who pinned her opponent in mere seconds in the first period, and finally Brody Mad and Ethan Choi for pinning two separate opponents. Our next dual meet is tomorrow at Euclid Middle School. Please come and support your team if you are able!

While our Founding Fathers, presidents, and military leaders are remembered as heroes of American culture, it's often overlooked how indigenous people contributed to many of the major events in the nation's history. November is Native American Heritage Month and here is a Native American who left a lasting mark with their leadership, bravery, and innovations:

Also known by his proper name of Wahunsenacawh, Powhatan is perhaps best remembered as the father of Pocahontas, a woman (also called Matoaka) known for her role in English colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia in the early 1600s. He was also a massively powerful chief at the time, his authority extending over 30 tribes and some 15,000 Algonquian-speaking people of the coastal Virginia area. Powhatan had a mixed relationship with the newcomers, his early assistance giving way to open warfare as they battled for control over the territory, though their relations were largely peaceful by the time of his death in 1618.

Powhatan, a Native American that we honor this month for Native American Heritage Month.
