Monday, January 22nd

Hello Pumas. This is No Place For Hate’s Racial Awareness Week. I am Caley from No Place for Hate and we want to raise awareness of people with different races and backgrounds.

Today I want to talk about racial stereotypes. A stereotype is an assumption about what someone will do or how they will behave based on what social groups they belong to, such as race. Stereotypes are dangerous as they can lead to prejudice and implicit bias, including racial stereotypes of white people, black people, or any other race; gender stereotypes; or other stereotypes based on characteristics people can’t control. Stereotypes may not be intended to be negative, but they can come off offensive. Stereotypes can be very inaccurate, because it is judging someone based on their looks. We want you not to think that people of a certain race all meet certain criteria and not stereotype people, no matter if these stereotypes are positive, neutral, or negative.

Thank you for listening to our announcement and remember that you matter.
